Anniversary Oil Stones

anniversarystones
All oil stones, natural or synthetic, are porous in nature. The presence of oil on the surface is required to keep the pores open, thereby permitting the stone to work effectively to suspend metal and abrasive particles from the stone's cutting surface. Oil applied to the surface is, however, absorbed into stone and tends to pass out the underside. To offset this absorption, Norton India and Crystolon stones are pre-filled with oil at the factory. This exclusive Norton quality feature retards loading, saves time, and eliminates the necessity of pre-soaking the stone prior to use. Arkansas stones, because of their dense construction, absorb oil at a much slower rate. Hence, these stones do not require oil pre-filling during manufacture. However, a few drops of Norton Oil should be applied prior to use.

Waterstones

waterstones
Waterstones are a manmade stone designed to be softer than an oilstone. This softer grade of stone allows it to be used with water as the lubricant versus oil to develop a fast cutting slurry with use. The Norton Waterstone system was designed in a carefully planned sequence to create sharpening efficiency. You get the level of abrasiveness you need at each stage without wasting time trying to sharpen your tools on a grit that is too fine too soon. Because waterstones wear concave with use, they must be reflattened periodically with 220 grit diamond bench stones or 220 grit waterproof sandpaper attached to a glass plate.

8 x 3 x 1 Combination 1000/4000 Grit waterstone: $49.00

Diamond Sharpening Stones

diamondstones
Diamonds are the hardest material known and are extremely efficient for sharpening any hard material, including carbide. Norton diamond bench stones are made from using single, solid crystals of monocrystalline diamond that are nickel bonded to a sturdy steel substrate for faster stock removal and extended service life and precision flatness. The recommended lubricant is water, although oil can be used if desired. Generally used for tool and knife repair and initial sharpening procedures.

11-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 3/8 220 grit diamond bench stone: $109.00

Norton Oil

Highly refined lubricating oil specifically formulated for sharpening stone use, but equally ideal for lubricating jobs. It will not load or “gum-up” sharpening stones. Meets U.S. Pharmacopoeia standards for mineral oil purity; it may be used around food preparation operations.
